چکیده

A recent article by Higgins et al. reported the identification of a novel carbapenem-hydrolyzing class D -lactamase (CHDL), defined as OXA-143, in a carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii strain isolated in Brazil in 2004 (5). This enzyme, which has 88% identity with OXA-40, is the first representative of a novel subgroup of CHDLs whose prevalence remains to be determined (5). In an attempt to carry out this task, we have conducted a surveillance study of carbapenem-resistant A. baumannii isolates in order to determine the antimicrobial susceptibility patterns and prevalence of blaOXAtype carbapenemase genes in medical centers in both the southeastern and southern regions of Brazil. We report here a high prevalence of carbapenem-resistant A. baumannii carrying the blaOXA-143 and blaOXA-23 genes, along with the first isolation of strains carrying the blaOXA-72 (OXA-72 is a singleamino-acid variant of OXA-40) and blaOXA-58 genes in Brazilian hospitals. From 2004 to 2008, 36 carbapenem-resistant A. baumannii isolates recovered from different patients hospitalized in eight medical centers were screened for the presence of genes encoding metallo-lactamases (M Ls) and OXA-type -lactamases (6, 15). Flanking sequences of blaOXA-type genes were characterized by PCR using primers targeting ISAba-1 or -3 (12). PCR products were confirmed by sequencing, and the

Objective(s):Antibiotic resistance in Acinetobacter baumannii and outbreaks caused by this organism have been reported from several areas of the world. The present study aimed at determining the antibiotic susceptibility profiles and the distribution of OXA-type beta-lactamases among Iranian Acinetobacter baumannii isolates from Qom of Iran. Materials and Methods: For this study, 108 non-duplic...

Low prevalence of blaOXA-143 in private hospitals in Brazil.

We read with great interest C. S. Antonio et al.’s letter describing the high prevalence of Acinetobacter baumannii carrying blaOXA-143 in Brazilian hospitals (1). Recently, we carried out a similar study, and although the blaOXA-143 gene was identified, its frequency was lower than that reported by Antonio et al. (1). During 2008, a total of 803 Gram-negative bacillus isolates, 1 isolate per p...

Types and prevalence of carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter calcoaceticus-Acinetobacter baumannii complex in Northern Taiwan.

The frequency of the carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter calcoaceticus-Acinetobacter baumannii (CRACB) complex increases annually in our hospitals. However, the types and prevalence of carbapenemases among isolates still remain unclear. In this study, we identified and collected 672 carbapenem-resistant isolates from a medical center in Northern Taiwan between April and December of 2010. There w...

Epidemiological characteristics and antimicrobial susceptibility among carbapenem-resistant non-fermenting bacteria in Brazil.

INTRODUCTION Non-fermenting Gram-negative bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter baumannii are widespread in the environment and are increasingly associated with nosocomial infections. Extensive and indiscriminate use of antibiotics in hospitals has contributed to an increased number of infections caused by these microorganisms, that are resistant to a wide variety of antimic...
